Athos Griechische Taverna, Kirchseeon, near Munich, Germany

Athos Griechische Taverna was located in Kirchseeon, a town 35 kilometres to the east of Munich. It opened in 2012 by Paskalis Hatzopoulos and Elza Athanassiou, Greek immigrants from Chalkidiki. Today the restaurant is permanently closed.

In the Spring of 2015, the owners received hate letters and abusive phone calls, saying things like “Go back to your stinking country!” or “Pigs, go home!” The apparent cause was the financial problems that Greece was facing at the time. A series of articles published by populist German newspapers had created a negative climate for Greeks living in Germany. Restaurants were an easy target.

A few months later I had lunch at Athos. It was late and the other customers had finished their meals.

We were greeted by Paskalis and Elza and had a chat.

The situation was apparently under control, the threats and the abuse had stopped, business was good.

Fried Eggplant and Zucchini with tzatziki

Braised Artichokes

Grilled baby lamb chops

Galatopita – a Greek Custard Desert.

We had our lunch and left wondering what the future would be for “Athos”.

For reasons that I do not know, the taverna is permanently closed today.
