Painted in 1954 from a sketch made at Compiègne in 1933, it is one of four versions based on the same design: one, dated 1944, was formerly in the E. C. Gregory collection; two others, dated 1934 and 1955, belong to the artist. The artist wrote (21 April 1955): ‘I frequently return to sketches and notes or “things remembered” and paint one or many different versions of subjects that have their origins in the past’.
